Gavin Stamp had a distinguished career as a scholar, with professorships at Cambridge and Glasgow. He combined this with activism as Chairman of the 20th-Century Society from 1983-2007. He was prominent in campaigns to save both Battersea and Bankside power stations, the latter now Tate Modern, and the much loved red telephone box, designed by one of his architectural heroes Giles Gilbert Scott.
His last book, Interwar, a survey of British architecture from 1918-1939, will be published in 2023 by Profile.
